A orillas de la costa, con más de 22 km de largo, Praia Grande se divide en 12 playas: Forte, Canto do Forte, Boqueirão, Guilhermina, Aviação, Tupi, Ocian, Vila Mirim, Vila Caiçara, Royal Garden, Florida y Solemar. Casi todas incluyen abundantes manglares o área bióticas formadas por copiosos árboles, y estuarios, amplias desembocaduras en el mar de un río ancho y profundo que contiene agua salada y dulce.
Una de sus playas, Canto do Forte, constituye la única conexión de la ciudad con la Fortaleza de Itaipú y es una de las más valoradas por su naturaleza, su paseo marítimo y las actividades al aire libre que se pueden practicar allí. Durante las tardes, es usual ver bañistas refrescándose entre apacibles olas, parejas disfrutando de una puesta de sol de película y enérgicos jóvenes practicando canotaje.
