Dicen que cuando el cielo y el mar se tocan, toda la belleza del mundo se centra en el punto de encuentro. Seguramente eso ocurrió cuando se formó la isla Saona, situada al sureste de la República Dominicana.
Rodeada por el mar Caribe, descansa sobre el agua turquesa con una extensión de 110 kilómetros cuadrados, donde la belleza natural de sus playas y áreas silvestres conmueve a los más de 600 mil turistas que la visitan cada año.
Saona es parte del Parque Nacional del Este, se la considera área protegida, razón por la cual no se encuentran edificaciones en ella y las dos comunidades que la habitan no pasan de 500 habitantes quienes viven en armonía con su entorno dedicándose principalmente a la pesca.
Una de las atracciones turísticas de la Isla Saona es la piscina natural más grande del mundo, ubicada en medio del mar a 400 metros de las costas. Se trata de una zona donde la profundidad del agua es de un metro, ideal para zambullirse y también para ver y tocar toda clase de especies marinas exóticas, como estrellas marinas, corales, peces tropicales, conchas y caracoles.
