Agosto es un mes especial para Argentina, ya que el día 17 se recuerda la muerte de uno de sus máximos próceres, el Libertador José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras. Sus cruzadas libertadoras de Argentina, Chile y Perú hicieron que su nombre resonara de norte a sur y de este a oeste de Latinoamérica.
En Mendoza, un magnífico parque de casi 500 hectáreas de superficie lleva orgullosamente su nombre. Encargado en 1896 al reconocido arquitecto y paisajista francés Carlos Thays, el parque se ha convertido desde su creación en un paseo obligado para disfrutar no solo de sus jardines y la naturaleza, sino también de las numerosas actividades recreativas, deportivas, educativas, culturales y turísticas que ofrece. Tal es así que la magnificencia se expresa desde los portones del ingreso que anuncian lo que está por descubrir.
Allí se celebra la conocida Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia, ya que el Anfiteatro o Teatro Griego Frank Romero Day es el escenario para este importante evento anual. Los más pequeños pueden disfrutar de las puestas en escena en el Teatro Pulgarcito, entre otras muchas atracciones. Y para quienes practican turismo aventura, el Cerro Arco los convoca para la práctica de parapentes, caminatas y avistaje.
Pero, además, el parque alberga al Museo de Ciencias Naturales y Antropológicas Juan Cornelio Moyano, con 40.000 ejemplares en exposición y al Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, sede del mundial Argentina 78 y de la Copa América 2011.
El mismo predio es la base de múltiples disciplinas educativas. Allí está ubicada la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo; el Centro de investigaciones científicas del Conicet, el Centro Científico Tecnológico, el Colegio secundario que depende de la Universidad, el parque de la Ciencia, Eureka, además de las dependencias del Ex Hospital Emilio Civit donde funciona actualmente la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales.Un maravilloso lago alberga en su costa al Club Mendoza de Regatas, donde se practica wakeboard y remo entre otros deportes acuáticos. El Velódromo y el Aeroclub, así como el Club de Golf forman parte de este inmenso pulmón verde del centro mendocino, coronado por un bellísimo Jardín Botánico y un Rosedal.
Los Caballitos de Marly, réplica de los que se encuentran en los Campos Elíseos de París, y las Fontaine de L’Observatoire y la Fuente de los Continentes son algunas de las decenas de obras artísticas emplazadas a lo largo del predio.
Cine, conciertos y actividades gratuitas al aire libre son el corolario a una visita que querrá ser repetida. San Martín, seguramente, estará orgulloso que su nombre se vea plasmado en un espacio tan monumental. Así, como fue su desempeño en la historia de la libertad de Latinoamérica.

August is a special month for Argentina, as on the 17th the death of one of its greatest heroes, the Liberator José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras, is commemorated. His liberating crusades through Argentina, Chile and Peru made his name resonate from north to south and from east to west in Latin America.
In Mendoza, a magnificent park of almost 500 hectares bears his name proudly. Commissioned in 1896 to the renowned French architect and landscape artist Carlos Thays, since its creation the park has become a must visit to enjoy not only its gardens and nature, but also the numerous recreational, sporting, educational, cultural and tourism activities that it offers. So much so, that the magnificence expressed right from the entry gates heralds what is to be discovered.
There the famous National Harvest Festival is celebrated, as the ‘Frank Romero Day’ Greek Theater or Amphitheater is the setting for this important annual event. The little ones can enjoy the productions at the Pulgarcito Theater, among many other attractions. And for those of you who practice adventure tourism, the Cerro Arco hill invites you to try paragliding, hiking and bird-spotting.
However, in addition, the park houses the Juan Cornelio Moyano Museum of Natural and Anthropological Sciences, with 40,000 exhibits on display and the Malvinas Argentinas Stadium, venue of the Argentina ‘78 World Cup and the 2011 Copa América.
The same venue is the base for multiple educational disciplines. The National University of Cuyo is located there; the Conicet Scientific Research Center, the Scientific and Technological Center, the Secondary School linked to the University, the Science Park, Eureka, as well as the former premises of the Emilio Civit Hospital where the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences currently operates.A marvelous lake is home to the Mendoza Regatta Club, where wakeboarding and rowing are practiced among other water sports. The Velodrome and the Aeroclub, as well as the Golf Club form part of this immense green lung of Mendoza’s center, crowned by a beautiful Botanical Garden and a Rose Garden.
The Marly horses, a replica of those found in the Champs Elysees in Paris, the Fontaine de L’Observatoire and the Fountain of the Continents are some of the dozens of works of art located along the grounds.
A cinema, concerts and free outdoor activities are the corollary to a visit that bears repeating. San Martin, surely, would be proud that his name is reflected in such a monumental space. Thus was his accomplishment in the story of freedom in Latin America.
